One of the questions I get asked the most before a session is some version of, “Jaime, what should we even wear?” I get it picking outfits for an entire family, especially when toddlers are involved and someone always seems to hate the color everyone else loves, is genuinely stressful. So let’s take some of that pressure off.
Start With a Color Palette, Not Specific Outfits
Instead of trying to match everyone perfectly (please, no matching head-to-toe outfits), pick a palette of 3-4 colors that work well together and let everyone choose within that range. Soft neutrals creams, tans, dusty blues, sage greens, and soft blush tones photograph beautifully against New Orleans backdrops, whether that’s Spanish moss-draped oaks, French Quarter brick, or City Park greenery.
A simple formula that works almost every time:
- 2 neutral tones (white, cream, tan)
- 1-2 deeper accent tones (navy, hunter green, rust, burgundy depending on season)
- Avoid bright neon colors, busy logos, or large graphic prints they pull focus from your faces
Mix Textures and Patterns Lightly
All-solid outfits can look a little flat in photos. A little texture linen, knit, light florals, or subtle stripes adds depth without being distracting. If one person wears a pattern, keep everyone else solid so it doesn’t compete.
Dress for the Season and the Location
New Orleans weather is its own personality. If we’re shooting in spring or fall, lightweight layers (a cardigan, a light jacket) give us versatility and extra texture for photos. Summer sessions call for breathable fabrics nobody looks relaxed when they’re sweating through their shirt. If we’re doing a session somewhere with water or mud (looking at you, City Park and the Fly), closed-toe shoes or sandals you don’t mind getting dirty are a smart call.
Think About Where the Photos Will Live
If you’re planning to print and frame these, think about your home’s color scheme. Photos with tones that complement your living room or hallway gallery wall will feel more cohesive than something that clashes the moment it’s printed.
A Few Practical Tips
- Bring a backup outfit for little ones. Spills happen. Always pack an extra shirt.
- Avoid clothes that are brand new. Wrinkles from packaging and that stiff, unworn look show up on camera. Wear things at least once before the session.
- Skip busy logos and text. They date photos quickly and distract from faces.
- Coordinate, don’t match. Matching is fine for some sessions, but coordinated outfits tend to look more natural and timeless.
